What I won't do: * execute a bad idea – if I see something is flawed in your plan, I will tell you and will help you adjust * write for the pharma / credit companies (fin-tech & medical professionals are welcome!) * respond to mass mailings (it would be nice to include my name in your message) * be available at the drop of a hat (my schedule is usually packed so please don't expect an immediate answer) What I will do: * I'll do the dirty in-depth research for you until I know your niche & your business better than you do * I'll help you get your idea off the ground, out of the bloody ocean and into the clear open waters of your perfect niche * I'll pave the way for you to enter the German market (and get you into international business if you're a German company) * I'll consult you from start to finish, incl. revisions (as long as you're willing to test out what I've written and don't act on a "hunch") * I prefer to start a copy consulting relationship with a short strategy call to get to know your business * * * If you want to get your business up-and-running for the German market (and exponentially grow your revenue this way) you need a native speaker with experience in marketing to connect you to your customers. * * * "Max has been very proactive, enthusiastic and responsive. He finished the work ahead of schedule [...] We'll surely use his service again! Thank you." (5* Rating) "Extremely proactive. Delivered ahead of schedule." (5* Rating) * * * Proactive. On point. Reliable. As a German native speaker and state-certified translator/interpreter (for English) and copywriter (for German and English) I have worked on numerous health, business and online-marketing projects (which have grossed in the high six-figures).
Elna, this was such an incredibly helpful wealth of information for someone (me!) who’s just dipping their toe into the water of freelance writing and hoping to make a full time career out of it. I can’t thank you enough for putting this together. This article is the first time I’ve ever heard of your blog or had the pleasure of reading your work and I’m so impressed and inspired! Honestly, I hope to be as skilled and successful as you one day. Thank you so much for giving back to up and comers like me with this article. Love love love it! Thank you!
Fantastic article! I’ll definitely add this one to my bookmarks! Although I’m not exactly “new” to freelance writing, I have decided to make this year “my year.” My year to get off the job platform sites like Upwork. My year to make more money from freelancing, my year to pitch to clients – both locally and nationally. My year to be more successful than I have in the past. Many of the tips you shared in this post were several of the ones that I had already planned to do this year to ramp up my business. But, you’ve also added several others that I hadn’t considered! Thanks for the great, informative post!

Millions of people who also have the internet at their fingertips are wondering exactly the same thing as you right now: How can I make money online? I am totally new to this. I stumbled across a site on my facebook news feed for “freelance writers”. My curiosity led me to discover that such a thing exist. I enjoy writing mainly for my school assignments and topics that I am passionate about just leads to words flowing effortlessly from my head. I think I really want to learn more about this now that I have discovered it’s a thing! Glad your very informative post was the first I read. Now I am even more interested. I am also stunned by your dedication to respond to each person’s response. You really love what you do.

Another level of generalists are SEO copywriters. At a minimum, SEO copywriters know how to integrate target keywords and phrases into web copy to maximize organic search benefit and avoid penalties. Some can even keyword research (if scoped in the project). Naturally, SEO copywriters are exactly the writers you need when you want to create content to help your website rank better organically in search results to get you more traffic.

Bookmarking this blog post. I just started writing guest posts for a client and I get few bucks for it. The article is 600 t o1500 words that pay 3$ to 10$ which I think is an unreasonable price. I wanted to earn more so I should start paying attention more in writing. I would love to earn and learn more in freelancing jobs such as this because I’m also a mom.
So, whenever someone asks me what I do, I reply that I’m a content writer. Quite often, they aren’t sure what that means, and for good reason.  It’s not the most descriptive job title in the world, but that’s because content writing has to remain as open and flexible as it can; content writers wear a lot of hats.  Ask 10 different content writers what they do during the day, and you’ll most likely get 10 different answers.  The truth is the job of a content writer is about much more than just churning out articles or blog posts.  Let’s take a moment to break down the job of the content writer, and see if we can develop a more thorough understanding of just what we content writers do – and why you probably need one.
I’m also interested in writing poetry and prose as well as short stories. Here is where my creative and adventurous spirit comes alive. In my younger years I created a belief systems that one could not be a poet and get paid. Now I release that limited thought and allow myself to express my creativity in abundance and receive in abundance. Are there any particular clients and sites to check out that focus on a need for the poetic and fantastical?
Thank you for the post! I’m a bit overwhelmed at the wealth of content I am about to scour on your site. Hours of learning, here I come! I received my first two clients a month ago (one from my dad who is a web developer and the other upon referral from my first client). I am serious about gaining more clients and setting out as a full-time writer, but the process of finding new clients has always intimidated me. I am excited to apply your advice. Congratulations, you just won a new “stalker.” 😉
The content writer doesn’t just write 500 words on how great your hat shop is and call it a day; a good content writer will ensure that in addition to content being fresh, it’s also optimized for the specific keywords that are going to increase your search ranking, bringing more visitors to your site.  We understand the value of a great headline, appropriate keyword density, and keep up with current SEO best practices to ensure that the methods we’re using are the most effective.  If you’ve been seeing your search ranking sinking, a good content writer can dig you out of the hole of SEO silence.
This past year has been a roller coaster ride for me. I want to give freelance writing a try. I did get accepted to a content mill site, but the jobs on there go so fast I can never get a chance to grab one to work on. 🙁 I do not have a portfolio and I’ve never made one. I also do not blog anymore. So, how can I get into freelance writing? How do I build up a portfolio or show my writing? Free hosting is all I can do now, and I’m sure that is going to be a turn off to a client. Any tips would be great. Thanks.

Hi I'm Elna and I'm a freelance writer and mom blogger. I help people just like you become a profitable freelance writer. Within 6 months of starting my freelance writing business from scratch I was able to earn a full-time living as a part-time freelance writer while taking care of my twin toddlers. However, depending on the business’ marketing strategy, a content writer might infuse a bit of copywriting magic into their content to help support sales. For example, a blog post that includes a content upgrade at the end will need some copywriter-style words. They’ll need to ask the user to take an action (such as opt-in), which helps funnel readers into the beginning of the sales process. Win!
Quality readable content is key here. Google, for example, will recognize that people are leaving your site soon after arriving if they perceive that your site or blog is full of junk content. This is called "bounce rate." If your bounce rate is high, then people are quickly leaving your site. But for the sake of your business, to build your online reputation and brand, you want people to visit your site, stay for a while, and then keep revisiting over the long term.
As a blogger myself, I find it also quite hard to update regularly and momentum might be the most important rule if you want to be successful with your blog (not just on monetary terms but also if you want to be proud of your work). It goes without saying, the content must be a priority and it must be relevant to your interests, whereas writing about stuff that doesn’t hold any relevance might result in dry, dull writing and it ends up damaging the whole work. So if you see that you can’t hold up to a really tight schedule, maybe it would be advisable to downscale a little bit in order to regain momentum.

Thank you so much for replying, Elna! Thank you for all of the information you provide on here. Your advice and posts have given me a lot to work with during this time of dead ends instead of beating my head against the wall trying to figure out how to get more work. I’m at the point where I am down to one job while the other is communicating less and less with me so it’s making me nervous. Thank you, thank you, thank you for providing this resource! #multilingual copywriting
