Hi Elna! Thoroughly enjoyed this delightful, informative article. I am a full time paralegal with a B.A. in Journalism. I’m about 5 years away from retirement…and would like to shift from full time paralegal work to freelance writing. I’ve been writing a column (“Throwback Thursday”) in the local paper for a year now, for free, but of course I get the bylines from those which is how I’ve built my portfolio. How would you reccomend I transition to freelancing. I’m interested in writing about legal topics for lay people…such as how to find a good attorney…and small community life…and parenting.
"Ideation" is a marketing industry buzzword that describes the creative process of finding a subject, title and angle to write about; and ideation begins with analytics. Most ideation is done in a team setting, but freelance writers are usually on their own. Which is why it's helpful to know how professional marketing teams generate ideas. Before doing that, successful content writers need to:  #content writer software
Currently I am in high school and working a part time job, I probably only work an estimated 8 hours a week though. I have been longing to be a writer for quite some time, I’ve been wanting to be a freelance writer but sadly, most of the sites that pay you require a credit or debit card and I do not own one. Is there any freelance writing jobs that would possibly pay me in cash or something along those lines?
There are some 'free' article spinners out there that require you to enter your text with properly formatted 'spintax' in order to create the end result. But how you need a totally separate tool to create this machine formatted text, so how is this really useful to you? Spinbot does all thinking for you, from taking in the context of every phrase to creating additional textual content that is as readable and meaningful as the text you originally entered.
Website content is important because it helps you attract potential customers to your web pages via search engine optimization (SEO). Once they land on your site, the content helps people decide whether to sign up for more information and become leads. If you have products for sale, the content helps them make buying decisions, too. Website content is also a crucial component in building an online presence for your business. That’s why it makes sense to hire a professional content writer to create your website content.
Elna, this was such an incredibly helpful wealth of information for someone (me!) who’s just dipping their toe into the water of freelance writing and hoping to make a full time career out of it. I can’t thank you enough for putting this together. This article is the first time I’ve ever heard of your blog or had the pleasure of reading your work and I’m so impressed and inspired! Honestly, I hope to be as skilled and successful as you one day. Thank you so much for giving back to up and comers like me with this article. Love love love it! Thank you!
Ideally, you’ll have somebody to edit your writing. If you’re responsible for writing and editing your web content, don’t do both in the same day. When the writing is still fresh, your mind will automatically make up the gaps in your copy and your editing will be subpar. Instead, put it away and come back to it another day — or at least several hours later.

Thank you for this informative blog. This indeed enlightened a writer like me to be extra cautious as to what sites to visit. I have been writing as freelancer for barely a year now. Lately, I have been hired by a private client through a website not included in the ones you have mentioned. In just 5 days, I have written 22 articles/blogs for her but unfortunately, I was not paid. Worst, she became inactive on skype and on the site where we both are members. What disheartened me more was that I have found some of my blogs already posted online on different sites. Coming across this blog, I now have several options as to what sites to visit and what to do as well. Thanks again. By the way, I am a stay-at-home mom too.

Hi Elna I am interested in writing. In high school I actually wanted to become a writer for photography, blogs, health, creative writing. But now about 8 years later I have no experience and no schooling but would love to get into it. Where do I start even creating a portfolio? I’d love to take your class but unfortunately I do not have any upfront money for that. Thank you in advance if you reply.

Thank you for the post! I’m a bit overwhelmed at the wealth of content I am about to scour on your site. Hours of learning, here I come! I received my first two clients a month ago (one from my dad who is a web developer and the other upon referral from my first client). I am serious about gaining more clients and setting out as a full-time writer, but the process of finding new clients has always intimidated me. I am excited to apply your advice. Congratulations, you just won a new “stalker.” 😉
As a university educated interior designer and with over 10 years very successful experience in high level international recruitment marketing and HR project management as well as over two years intensive online and social media experience I am now offering my work and expertise here on UPWORK. My upbringing as well as my education has been bilingual German/English, I consider myself a native German speaker and absolutely fluent in English. I was working with Fortune 500 companies consulting businesses in the retail, automotive and engineering sectors during my cooperate years as well as small business and start-up entrepreneurs. Quitting my successful cooperate world career two years ago and pursing freelancing full time has given me the freedom to combine my expertise in HR, Recruitment Marketing and Project Management with my strong passion for Social Media Marketing (and a design background is also always helpful in the “pretty” SM marketing world). I am proficient in Microsoft Office and familiar with Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs and Social Media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest etc. In regards to frequently used systems in the social media world I have very good knowledge of squarespace, wix, leadpages, canva.com, picmonkey, mailchimp, filmora/wondershare, microsoft movie maker, webinarjam, zoom, digistore24 as well as scheduling softwares like hootsuite and buffer and course platforms like teachable or udemy. I have created copy for online ads, promotional e-mails, job ads, info brochures, CVs etc. I am experienced in writing appropriate content for blogs, fb ad, job ad, tweets, doing extensive online research as well as in designing attractive visual marketing posts, ebooks or presentations representing your brand as well supporting members in Facebook Groups. Trying to always learn more and to be up-to-date with the latest ideas and trends in the social media world I am strongly following the work of experts like Amy Porterfield, Rick Mulready, Michael A. Stelzner, Jon Morrow, Derek Halpern, Kimra Luna and many more. Services & support I offer include but are not limited to classic Social Media support and VA tasks to translations English/German, copy writing for social media or blog posts, project management, planning and set up recruitment strategies for small business, interview preps, candidate pre-screenings & support during interviews, full recruitment management as well as CV and job ad copy for the German speaking job market. I am pretty flexible with respect to working hours. Deadlines are sacred for me and I will work closely with you always trying to fulfill my client’s expectations. Many people would say that Germans are usually known for being reliable, professional, perfectionists and delivering work on time…and this German here is exactly one of these Germans. :) I do have to say that I also expect the same professional behavior and partnership from my clients. You have questions or queries? You have a business and plan to take it online to the social media world but do not know where to start? You want to get started on THAT project, that you had on your mind for so long but no time to do it all yourself? You are looking for a reliable partner to take care of your small business social media needs but do not want to hire a full time staff member yet? Then contact me NOW and let us get started!
Rewriting your article by hand is the classic approach that is slowly dissolving, however, many people still prefer so. Write manually and then rephrasing to ensure the finest quality is the safest way but it can often hours, days or weeks to finish a writing task that can otherwise take only a little time. And that’s why there also exist people who like to save the trouble and their time, so they look for an article rewriter or article spinner to do the job.
This was my first Upwork contract and my first German translation. I fumbled through a lot of the process blindfolded and thankfully Ela was patient with me. She provided a good translated file, that had the standard typos you would expect in a 70k+ novel, but she was always willing to go back and make changes to the document efficiently, no matter how many times I contacted her. From memory, I think it was her first novel translation too. So we really did have a learning experience, but to me, I think it worked out well despite the hiccups I provided. She also helped with ad/marketing copy within hours of request.
I’m just now starting to explore the possibility of working as a writer and came across this article. I’ve always enjoyed writing and I think I’m fairly good at it, but I don’t have any specific training or education besides what I learned in my college English classes, and English wasn’t my major so I only took what was needed for GE requirements. In your experience, does one need any specialized training or education to be taken seriously in the writing world?

Thanks for this list. It is really helpful. I recently decided to try freelance writing, and I was accepted for an online writing gig site. This acceptance has boosted my confidence to much. Just to know they liked my writing sample and said yes means a lot to me. Now, I am sure I can apply anywhere, and even if it is a no from others, I still have my yes to hold on to that keeps me going. Great post.

This is the first post that I’ve read of yours and I just want to say thank you for publishing such an informative piece! I’m currently entering my senior year of college and I have recently become passionate about getting started with freelance writing. I’ve always enjoyed writing and would like to turn it into a career that allows me to pursue my goal of traveling to every country in the world (or most countries at least haha). I have no writing samples/portfolio and that’s where I’m kinda stuck right now. Im going to check out your blog for more tips on getting started! Thanks again!
I’m 17 (living in the UK) and I really love the idea of being a free lance writer or something similar. However I’m concerned that I should have different aspirations? I mentioned it to my friend but she said that I should be thinking about a job that is a bit more stable. I still live the idea of free lance writing though as writing has always come very naturally to me. I’m in my final year of collage ( what you guys would call high school?) And I’m not sure what the most useful thing for me to do next would be. Do you have any ideas about what kind of degree I could do at university or useful stuff I could do in a gap year, or even right now? Thanks you!

Hello, I need a copywriting job done for 10 articles in ENGLISH, about a certain topic. Each article should be about 1000 words long. I will provide you with the article template and the things each article should cover, so basically the research will be done by me and you will only need to rewrite it in a conversational tone that's appropriate for blogs. The budget is 5$ per article. ...

I can provide English-German and German-English translation. More about me: My name is Inga, I am a professional blogger, creative and content writer from Germany. During my studies, I completed a one-year scholarship at the University of Melbourne, Australia, where I majored in Creative Writing. These are all great ideas. The problem, which I haven’t heard anyone address, is that all these places want to see a portfolio of your work. If you’re just starting out, it’s not likely you have one. In my case, I did extensive technical and creative writing for my previous company but it was all considered intellectual property for them, thereby preventing me from including it in any personal portfolio of mine. How does one build a portfolio if you already need one to get started?

Your article is helpful, and I plan to try some of these. Over the last couple years I’ve inadvertently picked up some writing jobs by good fortune that have paid .30 – .50/word, but writing was always a sideline. Now I want to do more of it – but searches are yielding abysmal and depressing results. My content is rarely and minimally edited (by professional editors)and I turn it in on time with solid grammar and syntax. I’ve been looking and finding gigs at .01/word or less. No wonder so much of the writing I read on the web is crap, including articles written by those who don’t know the difference between “less” and “fewer.” I hope your tips will help me find some quality gigs. After all, my name is attached to it even if there’s no byline.
I am a freelance artist/illustrator and writer from Germany, available for translation, editing and proofreading as well as illustration and detailed drawings. As a native German speaker and being fluent in the English language I help my clients translate their texts from English to German so they sound as natural as possible. My main translation works revolves around novels - I am an avid reader, so my orthography, grammar and style of writing are excellent. I've been drawing since I was little and have been doing it professionally since 2017 after graduating. I specialize in graphite, coloured pencils and pastels, my main topics being nature and literature. As I am currently studying Graphic Design in a correspondence course I also work digitally with a graphics tablet and Adobe Photoshop as well as Adobe Illustrator. Examples of my work can be found further down in my portfolio and on my Instagram page (@noelle_sophie_). I look forward to working with you!

My name is Florian Gawlitta. I am 24 years old, live in germany, and absolutely love to write and translate. People keep telling me that my stories move them, and that is why I want to write something for YOU, whether it's articles, stories or anything inbetween! Editing is also no problem! Need something more technical? No problem! I major in a niche technical writing major in germany, so all things technical writing or editing, I can do them! But I also love to translate anything from german to english or english to german - or many other languages. A lot of my writing can be found on Facebook "Florian Gawlitta, Writer and Dreamer"! Thank you in advance and have a wonderful day.

Thank you so much for replying, Elna! Thank you for all of the information you provide on here. Your advice and posts have given me a lot to work with during this time of dead ends instead of beating my head against the wall trying to figure out how to get more work. I’m at the point where I am down to one job while the other is communicating less and less with me so it’s making me nervous. Thank you, thank you, thank you for providing this resource!

What an informative and fun article. While I’ve been writing for years, I’ve never had the courage to venture out because I haven’t got a degree, and feel very intimidated by a lack of formal education. But, when I say I’ve been writing for years, I mean I have been asked by everyone to write almost everything…including breakup up letters, condolence cards to the family of a murder victim, return texts in the middle of a text-fight (those are fun) and even an anonymous letter to a woman who’s best friend spotted her husband with another woman. (Not fun.) I’ve written proposal letters for house-hunters, eulogies, on and on and on….and I love it. I’ll write anything (within my knowledge base) and be happy doing so. Finally, after my last request from a long ago former coworker, to write a plea to Salvation Army for assistance, I decided to try to finally do what I love and learn to profit from it.

If you have the vision, I'll provide the words. Whether you're looking to skyrocket your sales or find the perfect way to articulate your business's mission, values and USP on your website - I can take what's in your head and put it on the page, perfectly formed. Too many businesses overlook the importance of the words they choose when communicating with their customers. This is a critical mistake that's harming your business. After all, your copy is your voice, the only one your customers will likely ever hear - it's vital that you use it to make a connection. Connecting with your customers is the first step on the road to making a sale. Whatever the medium, I can help you. =============== Feedback I've received right here on Upwork (to date, never fewer than 5*): • "Steven helped me get my soul into my website copy. For the first time, I am to send people to my website thanks to him. It's truly been a gift to work with his creative genius." • "High quality, great communication, very skilled. Steven always delivers better than expected, this is why we use him continuously! Highly recommended." • "He's incredible. Highly recommended!" • "It has been a pleasure working with Steven. He's a very talented writer and creates amazing content. I hope to work with him again soon when I need more content." =============== My background: I started my career in a client-facing sales role, which taught me (the hard way!) how to sell, and how to stop looking at the world from my own point of view, but from my clients'. What do they need? How can I fulfil that need? I use these principles in my writing daily. I moved out of sales and into corporate project management roles within blue chip IT and finance firms. Learning how to communicate at a corporate level has been invaluable in my work - I work with many corporate clients. These days, I'm a creative copywriter, a role which blends my varied experience with my greatest strength - my ability to write copy that gets people moving. =============== Interested in working together, or in learning more? Click on the green 'invite' button and drop me a few details about your project. I always respond to invites promptly, so it won't be long before we can connect for a chat. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Steven To rank well in the big search engines you have to first concentrate on getting your website indexed and for this reason you need article writing tool. You can pay for each article to writer but this software will do this for you and will post articles direct to your websites too.
