This is the first post that I’ve read of yours and I just want to say thank you for publishing such an informative piece! I’m currently entering my senior year of college and I have recently become passionate about getting started with freelance writing. I’ve always enjoyed writing and would like to turn it into a career that allows me to pursue my goal of traveling to every country in the world (or most countries at least haha). I have no writing samples/portfolio and that’s where I’m kinda stuck right now. Im going to check out your blog for more tips on getting started! Thanks again!
Elna, this was such an incredibly helpful wealth of information for someone (me!) who’s just dipping their toe into the water of freelance writing and hoping to make a full time career out of it. I can’t thank you enough for putting this together. This article is the first time I’ve ever heard of your blog or had the pleasure of reading your work and I’m so impressed and inspired! Honestly, I hope to be as skilled and successful as you one day. Thank you so much for giving back to up and comers like me with this article. Love love love it! Thank you!

For example, let’s say you follow an amazing food blogger who you get almost all your dinner ideas from. She comes up with healthy and quick meals that fit perfectly with your lifestyle. One day, you visit her site expecting a daily recipe, but instead, find a post on color-coordinating your wardrobe. The horror! Chances are you’d be turned off by it and would quickly search for a substitute food blogger. Audiences expect you to provide what they need — consistently.
Brand journalists are often masters at writing headlines, since online journalism often lives and dies by click-thrus based on those headlines. Brand journalists can be a solid match for content marketing pieces because they’re naturally geared more for storytelling than for hard sells and product details. They can also be good for the kinds of stories you might pitch for third-party placement, content highlighting your company’s history or reason for being, newsletters, community involvement stories — even blog posts that take on a more narrative or investigative angle.
I read 10-20 books per year, write almost every day, but I am having trouble knowing what the next steps are to building my credentials, especially without a degree, prior payed experience, or a high volume of readers to my blog. I really just want one simple freelance gig, but I can’t seem to land one. I feel like I’m on a raft in the middle of the ocean!

Content writers might enroll in electronic writing certificate programs. These programs are available at the undergraduate and graduate levels and offer courses in such topics as Web design, blogging, wikis, electronic rhetoric, and technical writing. In many cases, employers are more considered about writing and grammar skills than with education. Many employers require a writing test to be completed by applicants.
A popular online marketing tool for businesses to build brand awareness is through the use of blogs. A creative writer uses ideas and imagination to entice readers with their writing. Creative writers may write books and ebooks, scripts and screenplays, speeches, poems, and more. Other typical forms of creative writing include marketing copywriting, press releases and advertising copy. Unlike technical writers, who focus more on educating readers, creative writers may focus on entertaining them. However, this is not clear cut, as the creative writing technique of storytelling is widely used, both in technical writing and in marketing.
Thank you for this informative blog. This indeed enlightened a writer like me to be extra cautious as to what sites to visit. I have been writing as freelancer for barely a year now. Lately, I have been hired by a private client through a website not included in the ones you have mentioned. In just 5 days, I have written 22 articles/blogs for her but unfortunately, I was not paid. Worst, she became inactive on skype and on the site where we both are members. What disheartened me more was that I have found some of my blogs already posted online on different sites. Coming across this blog, I now have several options as to what sites to visit and what to do as well. Thanks again. By the way, I am a stay-at-home mom too. Software offer also video creation. You can used your article as a script for video and create high quality video. By adding selected voice and own images you will get more people engaged to your website.
