However, depending on the business’ marketing strategy, a content writer might infuse a bit of copywriting magic into their content to help support sales. For example, a blog post that includes a content upgrade at the end will need some copywriter-style words. They’ll need to ask the user to take an action (such as opt-in), which helps funnel readers into the beginning of the sales process. Win!
Thank you for this informative blog. This indeed enlightened a writer like me to be extra cautious as to what sites to visit. I have been writing as freelancer for barely a year now. Lately, I have been hired by a private client through a website not included in the ones you have mentioned. In just 5 days, I have written 22 articles/blogs for her but unfortunately, I was not paid. Worst, she became inactive on skype and on the site where we both are members. What disheartened me more was that I have found some of my blogs already posted online on different sites. Coming across this blog, I now have several options as to what sites to visit and what to do as well. Thanks again. By the way, I am a stay-at-home mom too.
Hi Elna! Thoroughly enjoyed this delightful, informative article. I am a full time paralegal with a B.A. in Journalism. I’m about 5 years away from retirement…and would like to shift from full time paralegal work to freelance writing. I’ve been writing a column (“Throwback Thursday”) in the local paper for a year now, for free, but of course I get the bylines from those which is how I’ve built my portfolio. How would you reccomend I transition to freelancing. I’m interested in writing about legal topics for lay people…such as how to find a good attorney…and small community life…and parenting.
I’m just now starting to explore the possibility of working as a writer and came across this article. I’ve always enjoyed writing and I think I’m fairly good at it, but I don’t have any specific training or education besides what I learned in my college English classes, and English wasn’t my major so I only took what was needed for GE requirements. In your experience, does one need any specialized training or education to be taken seriously in the writing world?
Your article is helpful, and I plan to try some of these. Over the last couple years I’ve inadvertently picked up some writing jobs by good fortune that have paid .30 – .50/word, but writing was always a sideline. Now I want to do more of it – but searches are yielding abysmal and depressing results. My content is rarely and minimally edited (by professional editors)and I turn it in on time with solid grammar and syntax. I’ve been looking and finding gigs at .01/word or less. No wonder so much of the writing I read on the web is crap, including articles written by those who don’t know the difference between “less” and “fewer.” I hope your tips will help me find some quality gigs. After all, my name is attached to it even if there’s no byline.
You’re welcome! So happy you found this post helpful for you living in the UK! For me, I was a stay at home mom so I didn’t work at that time. I was a bit bored with the day-to-day of taking care of twins…you know diaper changes a million times a day, and cleaning up messes just as much. I needed a creative outlet so I explored work at home stuff online and my husband told me about freelance writing and being a virtual assistant. I immediately gravitated towards writing! #article rewriting tool
I recently came across some of your posts after searching for new ways to find and pitch freelance writing clients. While I’ve been working as a freelancer for a few years now, it never hurts to look for ways to expand my business. There’s a lot of crap out there on the Web that offers the same old suggestions for locating writing clients (usually accompanied by a heavy sales pitch to sign up for an expensive workshop). This article offered fresh ideas and unique details about the standard job sources–I was really impressed! Thank you! I am going to put some of these ideas into my business plan this month.
We all have opinions on what types of content go viral: a soundless social video, a data-backed explainer, a perfectly timed newsjack. But no matter the format, it ultimately comes down to emotion. Does the story make you feel enraged, inspired, understood? With everything you create you have to ask: If this scrolled by on my newsfeed, would I care? If the answer is no, it’s not worth it. Your online content habits are your own best judge.
Must be able to keep up with the latest news in the entertainment business. We focus mostly on the hiphop genre. Thanks for this list. It is really helpful. I recently decided to try freelance writing, and I was accepted for an online writing gig site. This acceptance has boosted my confidence to much. Just to know they liked my writing sample and said yes means a lot to me. Now, I am sure I can apply anywhere, and even if it is a no from others, I still have my yes to hold on to that keeps me going. Great post.
Great post, so many great ideas! I was so excited when I read your bio and saw that you are a mom of twins. I have 6 month old twins myself. Also, I am at the cusp of finishing my BA, wondering how I can work from home with what I have learned at my university. Thank you for all of the guidance and inspiration on your site. It definitely makes freelance writing a more tangible option for me!
Defining your website’s voice and tone helps you create on-brand content. Your website’s voice is like its personality. Think about how you might describe that in a few words, such as “knowledgeable”, or “professional”. That gives an overall idea of how your want your content to sound. The tone of your website’s content may vary depending on the audience. For example, some content might be aimed at beginners, while other content might assume that the audience is more informed.

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Although it’s more of a marketing position, I write content two days a week for a financial advisor, but it isn’t enough to pay the bills. Maybe it’s just the area I live in but I can’t land a writing gig to save my life. And writing is a real passion of mine so it’s very frustrating. I’ll try and apply some of your tips and advice. And I feel like no matter how many emails and resumes I send out, I rarely get a reply.
My ideal writer is looking for an opportunity to get 5* feedback and steady work. I am looking for someone who is… * A Native English Speaker (USA or Great Britain) * Has writing experience amazon affiliate content ( most important condition ) * College educated * Experienced or Newer to freelancer and looking for experience/exposure * Returning to the workforce and hungry to prove th...
Great list on content writing. I don’t know how many times I have seen websites with content that has clearly not been proofread. Silly mistakes that either make it look like it was written by someone with English as their second or third language, or they have just published their rough draft of ideas. A bit of care goes a long way to keep readers on the page ensuring they actually make it to the final call to action.
Understanding your client's need is the first step to a successful translation. I make sure to listen carefully to their wishes so that I can take it from there. I have a B.A. in International Communication and attended to clients from various cultural backgrounds in a practice-oriented, solution-based manner. I worked as Experienced Analyst for an online home shopping company for 1.5 years and edited translations from English to German and vice versa. I have experience as Copywriter for their German catalog concerning Product and Event Copy. For my clients, I have written academic as well as policy research reports concerning advertisement and advocacy. My clients included non-governmental organizations, private schools, online shopping and e-commerce companies as well as the public health sector. My working scope includes translation, content writing, transcription, copywriting, basic keyword research, editing, and review writing. I am interested in languages and how they shape the culture of a nation and would like to support my clients in localizing their messages to reach their target audience.
I want to develop a reputation as a writer who can provide full spectrum material from articles written in opulence and articles for the proletariat, easily accessible for all minds. I want to offer works ranging from the James Joyce to the George Martin styles. a few weakness are that I am terrible with spelling lol, am not very present on social media such as tweeter or linkedin and not sure I want to be and then I also do not have a website or portfolio yet.
If your score is too high, it doesn’t mean you need to dumb things down for your readers — it just means you might need to make simpler word choices or cut down your complex sentences. This ensures that visitors of varying education levels can get value from your content, and that readers who may speak English as a second language will understand it too. It also just helps keep your tone clear and relatable which should always be a goal when you’re creating web content.
Elna, thank you for this wonderful article. It is full of resources, and it has motivated me to begin work as a freelance writer. I am currently a single parent of two witty little boys, who works full time outside of the home. In reading this article, I have found a renewed strength and a bit of a push to move forward with optimism to start little by little until I am able to eventually work more time from home. I appreciate you sharing this information.
I am a well qualified Grafik Designer and Social Scientist (Magister Degree in Altamerikanistik/e.g. Anthropology). Besides artistic projects, I did research on plant perception in Switzerland. I have the ability to grow with a job, handle responsibility and build positive relationships with work colleagues at all levels. My last employer was very satisfied with my work rate, and I am confident that I can bring the same level of high performance to the jobs you will be offering me. I worked as artist and designer for diverse projects, as for example Prezi designs for the Week Signals Project. I did participate and experience design research as a ”consumer”, testing apps and games for tablets and smartphones. I feel certain that my strong research skills coupled with my ability and dedication to art, design and customer service (worked 5 years in direct customer service for Jägermeister SE) will be of immediate value to your company. I hope that you will look favorably upon my application by recognizing my enthusiasm, talents in the field of research, design and my future potential. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. I am seeking opportunities to design /draw, write content and or design Prezis.
"Ideation" is a marketing industry buzzword that describes the creative process of finding a subject, title and angle to write about; and ideation begins with analytics. Most ideation is done in a team setting, but freelance writers are usually on their own. Which is why it's helpful to know how professional marketing teams generate ideas. Before doing that, successful content writers need to: #content writer software
